The cremation process is a bit different for veterans. Here are some answers to questions you may have about VA cremation and other veteran concerns:
Does the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) pay for cremation? Unfortunately, the VA does not pay for cremation. However, it is possible to receive VA burial benefits for cremation. The VA does reimburse families pay for a portion of burial, funeral, and transportation costs related to a veteran’s death. You may be eligible to receive a veterans burial allowance if you’re paying for the burial, cremation, and funeral costs of your loved one and you won’t be reimbursed by any other organization. You will have to pay the costs upfront and then file a claim to receive a reimbursem*nt check. Those on active duty, serving as a member of Congress, or serving a federal prison sentence are not eligible for the veterans burial allowance. How do you arrange a veteran’s honors, such as the flag? Family members can arrange military funeral honors by contacting the honor guard agent for the branch of military service in which the deceased veteran served. VA-supplied burial flags are available at U.S. post offices. These flags are provided free of charge to the next of kin of honorably discharged veterans.
How do you arrange the Presidential Memorial Certificate? Any loved one of the deceased veteran must formally request the certificate. The VA administers the program, and the VA website provides a form (VA Form 40-0247) that you must fill out to request issuance of the certificate. In addition to the completed form, you must also provide a photocopy of the veteran’s official discharge document and death certificate. You can then submit the paperwork via mail or fax or in person at any VA regional office.
What are the logistics for interment in a National Cemetery? For burial in a national cemetery, fax any discharge papers to the National Cemetery Scheduling Office at (866) 900-6417. You can also scan and email the papers to NCA.Scheduling@va.gov with the person's name you're requesting burial benefits for in the subject line. Then call (800) 535-1117 to confirm the burial application.
