If you're part of an academic institution, you can sign up for a free trial of Microsoft 365 Education. After Microsoft verifies the academic eligibility of your school, you can buy Microsoft 365 products at academic prices, including products that are available for free, like Office 365 A1 for faculty and Office 365 A1 for students. You have until the end of the free trial to convert it to a paid subscription at academic prices.
This article describes how to verify your school's academic eligibility, check the eligibility status, and buy subscriptions at academic prices after your school is approved.
Before you begin
You must already have a Microsoft 365 Education trial subscription. If you don't have a trial subscription, visit https://www.microsoft.com/education/products/office, enter your school email address, and select Get started.
Verify that you have a trial subscription
If you're not sure if you have a Microsoft 365 Education trial subscription, use these steps to verify that you do.
Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
If you're using the Simplified view, select Subscriptions.
If you're using the Dashboard view, go to the Billing > Your products page.
Look for Office 365 A1 for faculty Trial and Office 365 A1 for students Trial. If you don't find these subscriptions, visit https://www.microsoft.com/education/products/office, enter your school email address, and select Get started.
Verify your school's academic eligibility
When you sign up for a free trial, you complete the eligibility verification wizard to provide your school's domain. In most cases, you receive immediate approval or denial of your school's eligibility. In some cases, we require more information to complete a manual eligibility review and reach out to you with a questionnaire to complete. This review can take up to 10 business days. After we review your school's eligibility information, we send an email that notifies you of your school's status.
You can close the academic verification wizard before you enter a domain and start using the trial subscription right away. However, you aren't eligible for academic prices until you complete the verification process. You must complete the process before the end of your free trial to convert to a paid subscription and continue to use it. This also applies when you convert to the free Office 365 A1 subscription.
If you exited the verification wizard before entering a domain, you can resume the academic verification wizard at any time during your free trial.

Check the status of your school's academic eligibility
After you have a Microsoft 365 Education trial, you can check the status of your school's academic eligibility at any time.
Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
On the home page, find the Billing card.The Billing card indicates the status of the verification process. The card shows one of the following statuses: approved, pending, declined, or add your domain.
Note
If you don't see one of those statuses, it means that you don't have a Microsoft 365 Education trial subscription. To start a free trial, visit https://www.microsoft.com/education/products/office, enter your school email address, and select Get started.
After your school's eligibility is verified, you can buy subscriptions at academic prices. You can also convert your free trial to a paid subscription. If you want to convert your trial subscription, you must do so before the end of the trial period.
Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
If you're using the Simplified view, select the Subscriptions tab, then select Add more products.
If you're using the Dashboard view, go to the Billing > Purchase services page.
To view academic offers, select the Education tab.
Note
The Education tab isn't displayed if your eligibility is pending.
When you find the offer that you want to buy, select it, then select Buy.
Complete the checkout process to buy the subscription.
When does my free trial end?
You can find the expiration date for your free trial subscription on the Your products page. You can also extend the trial.
Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
If you're using the Simplified view, select Subscriptions.
If you're using the Dashboard view, go to the Billing > Your products page.
Select the trial subscription.
In the Trial subscription section, the expiration date is shown.
If you want to extend the trial, select Extend trial end date. You can only do extend your trial once per free trial subscription.
My school isn't eligible. What do I do now?
If your school doesn't qualify as a Microsoft Qualified Academic Institution, you can still buy commercial offers in the admin center on the Billing > Purchase services page. School-issued email account. School network credentials. International Student Identity Card (ISIC) Verification code from a Microsoft representative or your institution's administrator.
Sign in to the Microsoft 365 portal. In the left pane, select Subscriptions. In the list of subscriptions and licenses, scroll down to the Office 365 <edition> section, and then look for The latest desktop version of Office. If you see this entry in the list, you have an Office subscription that's assigned correctly.
On the certification or exam details page of the exam you want to take, click “Schedule exam.” Sign in with your Microsoft account credentials associated with your Microsoft certification profile. While verifying your certification profile is up to date, make sure the “Job title” field says “Student—verified”.
Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools. All you need to get started is a valid school email address.
Keep in mind that account verification is an important security measure to protect your account from unauthorized access, so it's important to follow the necessary steps to verify your identity. To help protect your account from fraud or abuse, Microsoft temporarily locks accounts when unusual activity is noticed.
For a free Office 365 activation, consider signing up for an educational account. Many schools offer students and faculty access to Office 365 with their school email addresses. This allows you to use all its features without paying for a subscription.
When you sign up for a Microsoft account or add an email address to your account, we automatically send a request to that email for you to verify that we have the right address. To finish the process, just follow the verification link in the email.

After the account.live.com page has opened, select Security & Privacy, go to More Security Settings, scroll down and select Set up two-step verification. You'll have the option to confirm your identity via email, phone or the Microsoft account App.
Microsoft accounts are for personal use, and for accessing services like Outlook.com, Xbox or Skype. Microsoft work and school accounts are for organizations that use Microsoft 365 for business.
All you need is a valid school email address. It's not a trial – so get started today. Please enter your school email address (for example, john@contoso.edu). If you are experiencing issues with the school email address please contact the school administrator.
What are the eligibility requirements for Office 365 Education? You must be an active full-time or part-time student, faculty or staff member at an academic institution and: Have a school-specific email address provided by the school (for example, contoso.edu) that can receive external email.
Here's how to check: Head to the Office 365 Education site and click the "Find out if you're eligible" button. Enter your school email address. Microsoft will send you an email with sign up instructions if you're eligible for Office 365.
When you sign in to your Microsoft account, we may ask for additional proof that it's really you. Pick any of the email addresses or phone numbers you have on your account, and we'll send you a verification code.Once you've received the code, enter it wherever you are trying to sign in.
Typically, the verification process for an Azure free subscription can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, but in some cases, it may take up to 72 hours to complete the verification process.
For student status verification, you have a few options, including a) complete and submit the sign-up form; b) use your .edu email address, or c) submit proof of enrollment such as your student ID, your transcript or class list for the current term, your tuition bill for the current term, or an official acceptance ...
Have them sign in with their Microsoft account on their device. Select Start > Settings > Accounts > Select Verify and follow the prompts to verify their account. If you don't see the Verify option, open Microsoft Edge on their device and verify the account at https://aka.ms/familyverify.
