India and Germany Relations

When it comes to Europe, Germany is one of India’s most significant partners. India and Germany share a strong economic and developmental partnership. Besides the economic interest, the two countries have a shared interest in upholding democratic values, the rules-based international order, and multilateralism as well as the reform of multilateral institutions.

German investments in India

Germany is the seventh largest FDI source for India with the total FDI from April 2000-September 2021 being over USD 13 billion. As per the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, there are more than 1,700 German companies in India. German investments in India are spread to almost all the large sectors including transportation, electrical equipment, metallurgical industries, services sector (particularly insurance), chemicals, construction activity, trading and automobiles.

Recent German investments in India
In 2021 by German automotive components manufacturer Webasto, which invested USD 33.9 million to set up a sunroofs manufacturing facility in Pune. Birkenstock, a lifestyle brand, launched its collection via an e-commerce route with an Indian partner, Seva Group. Bayer, an agrochemical group, formed a new manufacturing plant at Vapi, Gujarat with an investment of USD 28 million. ZF Friedrichshafen AG has lined up Euro 200 million investments in India to increase its share in connected and autonomous technologies.

Adidas Marketing

Founded by Adi Dassler in 1948, the Adidas Group is the second-largest sporting goods company globally. The group entered India in 1996 as a joint venture with Magnum Trading.


The Allianz Group is a leading multinational financial services company with corporate customers in more than 70 countries. It offers an array of personal and corporate insurance services including property, life and health insurance, assistance services credit insurance and global business insurance. The company is headquartered in Munich, Germany and entered India in association with Bajaj Finserv. Today, it operates as Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance and Bajaj Allianz General Insurance.

Baerlocher Additives

Baerlocher is a leading worldwide supplier of additives for the plastics industry providing PVC additives and metal stearates for all plastic applications. It started its operation in the Indian market in 2000 and is called Baerlocher India Additives Private Limited.


Started its association in India in 1943, Badische Anilin und Soda Fabrik (BASF) is one of the largest chemical producers in the world. Running for 150 years now, it offers a wide range of products from chemicals, plastics, performance products and crop protection products to oil and gas.

Bayer was formed in 1863 in Leverkusen, Germany and presently has around 93,000 employees and is represented by 300 companies. Beiersdorf has been running in India since 1964. It has started its operations by selling its products through local distributors. In 1993, the company increased its stake to 51 per cent. Beiersdorf AG has two entities in India - BDF India and Nivea India.


BMW India Pvt Ltd is a premium luxury car maker and entered India in 2006 with its headquarters in Gurgaon, Haryana. BMW India has its manufacturing plant in Chennai which was established in 2007. B Braun Medical

Braun is a medical and pharmaceutical device company headquartered in Melsungen, Germany. B. Braun officially started its operation in India in 1984. It offers effective solutions and develops guiding standards for the healthcare system.


BIRKENSTOCK is one of the most well-known German brands in the world. With an approximate base of 3,000 employees, it is one of the German footwear industry’s largest employers. The brand entered India in 2020 and has been in popularity since then among the new generation.

Deutsche Bank

Founded in 1870, Deutsche Bank provides financial services to companies, governments, institutional investors, SME businesses and private individuals. It formed its first branch in India in 1980 and presently has branches in 16 cities. Merck came to India as E. Merck India Private Limited in 1967.
