Ingredients for Sweet Potato Dog Treats

You need just five ingredients to prepare these tasty treats for your four-legged friend: sweet potatoes, crumbled bacon, oats, eggs, and flour. If you have leftover sweet potatoes (perhaps you made this amazing sweet potato casserole), you can use those, but only if they’re plain and you haven’t mixed anything into them.

Substitutions and Variations

If you want, you can change some of the ingredients. A lot of dogs enjoy peanut butter, so you could add some of that. Another idea is to swap some of the oats for cooked rice. Wild rice works well, but make sure it’s good quality, not the kind labeled “feed rice.”

If your puppy isn’t used to oats, you might prefer to introduce them slowly to see if they’re well tolerated. If the pooch isn’t a fan, you can always use them up making oat bars Starbucks style.

Also, bear in mind you will need rolled oats, not instant oats or the kind that have mix-ins already added. Some ingredients that are human-friendly (such as the sweetener Xylitol) are toxic to dogs, even in small doses.

Pumpkin or butternut squash would work in place of the sweet potato. These simple homemade dog treats are a great way to use up leftover sweet potatoes.

Serving Suggestions

These sweet potato dog treats are treats rather than dog food, so just give your dog one at a time to see if he likes them.

The amount you can give at a time depends on the size of your dog as well as the size you make these, so if you’re using a small bone-shaped cookie cutter, you might want to give your dog two treats.

Of course, if you are aware your dog has any allergies or issues with any of the ingredients, you should use your own judgment and swap those ingredients out.

Storage Instructions

  • Store: Keep the dog biscuits in an airtight container in the refrigerator or pantry and use within a week.
  • Freeze: If kept in an airtight container or freezer bag, the treats should be fine for several months.
  • Thaw: Thaw the dog biscuits overnight in the refrigerator.

Dog Treat Recipes FAQs

Do you have to peel the sweet potatoes?

Sweet potato skins aren’t toxic to dogs but their chewy texture means they can cause intestinal blockages or choking with small dogs, so I recommend you do peel them first. If you have a large dog, use your discretion.

What kind of flour is best to use for these dog bone treats?

Whole wheat flour is more nutritious than all-purpose flour. Another option would be brown rice flour or even oat flour.
