How to Solve a Social Problem - Community Solutions (2024)
“If you remember nothing else I say, remember the distinction between a program and a process. A program is a solution to a problem, but a good process is a way of finding solutions and applying a methodology to many contexts and many problems. It’s much more valuable to have a good process than a good program any day,” our President, Rosanne Haggerty, told students at Amherst College last November, where her alma mater was holding a TEDx conference on “Disruptive Innovation.”
Rosanne told the group how she went from not asking the right questions to developing a methodology on solving social problems.
Identify a problem in your community that you would like to try and solve. Then as a group or individually look into what has been done to solve the problem to see what worked and what did not. Then write a proposal with your solution explaining how the problem would be solved.
In CmPS, students initiate a project by identifying real problems and implementing real solutions in their community – local, state, national, or even global. CmPS projects are student-driven and produce young leaders ready to solve problems they may encounter throughout their lives.
A social problem is an issue within the society that makes it difficult for people to achieve their full potential. Poverty, unemployment, unequal opportunity, racism, and malnutrition are examples of social problems. So are substandard housing, employment discrimination, and child abuse and neglect.
It is important to identify problems in the community in order to find solutions and make improvements for the betterment of society. It is important to identify problems in the community to empower individuals and communities to address and solve them.
