Service Packs are software updates from Microsoft (some other companies use the term, as well) which may contain updates making the software more reliable, more compatible and more secure. Service Packs can only be installed if there's a previous version of the same product on a computer.

Microsoft issues service packs for its operating system and for its Office Suites.

This is the list of the most current service packs:

For Windows VistaService Pack 2
For Windows 7Service Pack 1
For Office 2003Service Pack 3
For Office 2007Service Pack 3
For Office 2010Service Pack 2
For Office 2013 Service Pack 1

How can you tell which Service Pack you have? Here's how to check:

In Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7

1) From the Start Menu, RIGHT-click on (My) Computer. (It's only called "My" in Windows XP.)

2) Left-click on PROPERTIES.

3) At the top of the System Properties window, you will find both the version of Windows you are operating and which Service Pack is installed, if any. Here's an example from Windows 7 (notice it has Service Pack 1 installed) and another example from Windows XP (SP3).
