How do you check fuses on a Honda Civic? ›

Engine Compartment Fuse Box

Located near the battery. Push the tabs to open the box. Fuse locations are shown on the fuse box cover. Locate the fuse in question by the fuse number and box cover number.

The fuse box for the ABS is located in the engine compartment on the passenger's side. To open it, push the tab as shown. 253 to 256, or the diagram on the fuse box lid, which fuse or fuses control that component. Check those fuses first, but check all the fuses before deciding that a blown fuse is not the cause.

Your Civic uses a relay, located under/behind the left side of the instrument panel, to operate the horn.

The primary under-hood fuse box is in the engine compartment on the driver's side. To open it, push the tabs as shown. The interior fuse box is on the driver's lower left side. The secondary under-hood fuse box is next to the battery.

The blown fuse will be apparent because the wire element within will have melted or burned from the higher electrical current. You can also use a test light or a multimeter to identify the dead fuse without having to pull it out. Both tools are affordable and easy to use.

ABS Warning Light

Whenever the fuse is blown out ABS checking the warning light on the car dashboard will appear.

Your brake components would still function as they should even if you remove the ABS fuse. However, the ABS won't be able to regulate your brakes without the fuse. Once the ABS is disabled, there's a higher tendency that your brakes will lock up.

The ABS light comes on if there's a malfunction in the system. This includes blown fuses and damaged wires connecting the speed sensor and controller. Like any other electrical component in a car, the ABS is equipped with its own fuse – and fuses are prone to blowing up.

The horn relay is an electromagnetically controlled switching device that converts signals to sounds. Two symptoms of a faulty horn relay are a horn that's stuck on and one that doesn't work at all.

Bad relay: The relay for the horn system is also found in the fuse box. The horn relay controls the delivery of power to the horn itself. A bad relay will prevent the horn from working properly. If the relay is bad, you might hear a clicking sound coming from the relay when you try to honk the horn.

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel. The first step is to make sure the power is off before you start working with the fuses. Next, locate the fuse box, which is usually found in the basem*nt, garage, or utility room. Once you've found the fuse box, open the panel and look for the fuse that needs replacing.

You can use an ohmmeter to check continuity in motors, cables, and fuses. If a circuit has a break in continuity, it's “open” (it has a break in it). On the contrary, a good circuit will be “closed,” or complete.
