Abstract
This chapter's author caused a stir with his 2004 book Mind the gap, which acknowledged widening social inequalities. The chapter progresses the argument by suggesting that although strides were made towards more equal opportunities in the first three quarters of the twentieth century, it came to a halt through failure to address other inequalities that cause estrangement and resentment in society. In addition, income inequalities and unequal access to opportunities for social advancement are discussed, highlighting ‘inequality of treatment’. Equality is divided into five rough types: political equality, equality of outcome or result, equality of opportunity, equality of treatment and equality of membership in society. These types of equality are described separately. Both ideological wings fail to grasp that inequality is a complex evil. There are other sorts of fairness that must be addressed, the chapter ends by stating.
