With the number of people travelling nearing the pre Covid-19 levels, the Chennai International airport has to handle more transit passengers. Transit passengers having long hours of stay in the terminal now have an option to use the 'stay' option and take some rest between flights.

Transit passengers have to stay for long hours in the terminal to catch a domestic or an international flight and to provide relief for them. The airport authorities have created a facility. Passengers who travel through the Chennai airport can avail the 'stay' option located adjacent to the airport terminals. The facility also offers overnight stays.

COST OF REST AREAS

A single occupancy room will cost a passenger Rs 2,000, excluding the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and the charge for a double room is Rs 2,500. Passengers can also rent a room if they wish to stay for a couple of hours. Talking about the occupancy, with 20 rooms there is about 80 per cent these days and most of the bookings are done online.

PASSENGER SHARES EXPERIENCE

Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials told the Hindu, "Many transit passengers were either those from other cities here to catch an international flight or those who arrive from abroad to head to another district. These passengers sometimes have to stay put for over six to 12 hours. While some may choose to walk around the terminals, most want to rest."

One of the passengers shared his experience of transiting through the airport which was posted by the official Twitter handle of Chennai airport. The passenger said, "It is very nice. The infrastructure is good and it is fully air-conditioned."

But the lack of sign language and advertising for such a facility for passengers has remained a disadvantage, due to which many people have not been able to avail the facility. As per the report, if the officials put up signs at terminals and airport help desks, then that can help publicise the facility. Those who stay in the facility come mostly through recommendations from airlines or AAI staff, sources told the Hindu.
