Baby Food Rich in Iron (+3 Puree Recipes!) (1)

Making sure that your child is getting all the necessary nutrients and eating a well-balanced diet, including baby food rich in iron, can be challenging when they have inconsistent and unpredictable taste buds. These iron-rich baby food puree recipes are healthy and easy to make.

Baby Food Rich in Iron

Trying to feed your baby healthy food that is rich in iron can be a challenge with their unpredictable taste buds and small appetites. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “Iron deficiency is one of the most common problems among children, but it’s frequently not detected.”

Babies ages 6-12 months old need 11mg of iron per day and toddlers ages 1-3 years old need 7 mg of iron per day. Don’t stress too much though because children typically get enough iron a day by eating their everyday normal foods.

Iron is so important for babies. It’s essential in the making of hemoglobin, which is one of the main components of red blood cells that transports oxygen throughout the body. If your baby doesn’t get enough iron, organs and tissues may not get enough oxygen. This could potentially cause deficiencies in growth and development.

Breastmilk is the best and should be the primary source of iron for your baby when they are infants, but as your baby gets older, solids present an excellent opportunity to introduce iron-rich baby purees.

When your baby is around 6 months old, your baby’s iron needs can be met through iron-rich foods.

What Kind of Baby Food is Rich in Iron?

It is best to give your baby food that is rich in iron naturally instead of iron-enriched food. Iron-fortified cereals definitely shouldn’t be forgotten about, though! Baby cereals are a great ingredient to add to purees to thicken them up or make them more filling.

It’s also important to give your baby fruits and vegetables that are high in Vitamin C to help with iron absorption.
