When building the naturally aspirated 2.4L or turbocharged 2.0L engines for the 2012 Sonata, the manufacturer may have left metal shavings inside the block. As the engine runs, that debris circulates through the block and often ends up stuck in the oil galleries.

Hyundai Motor America is conducting a safety recall to inspect, and if necessary replace, the engine assembly in Model Year 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Sonata vehicles equipped with 2.0 liter turbo and 2.4 liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines manufactured at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.

When it comes to longevity, the Sonata is estimated to last 200,000 to 250,000 miles or 13 to 17 years with regular maintenance.

Hyundai/Kia: 2.0-L & 2.4-L Four-Cylinder

These engines have been known to spontaneously seize, leading to potential engine failure. The problem arises from metallic debris left behind during the manufacturing process, which restricts oil flow to connecting rod bearings, causing them to wear and fail.

Affected vehicles include certain model year 2011-14 Sonatas, 2013-14 Santa Fe Sports, 2012 Santa Fes, 2015-2016 Velosters, 2011-2013 and 2016-2017 Sonata Hybrids and 2017 Tucsons.

First, assess the overall condition of your vehicle. If the car is in good shape aside from the engine, rebuilding or replacing may be worthwhile. Next, consider the costs; rebuilding can often be cheaper, but if the engine has suffered significant damage, replacement might be more cost-effective.
